STATEMENT: Huawei launches F5.5G-oriented all-optical target network architecture for three phases

DUBAI, UAE, Oct. 13, 2023/PRNewswire/ -- During UBBF 2023, Richard Jin, President of Huawei Optical Business Product Line, delivered a keynote address titled "Making F5.5G a reality: Milestones on our path to a world intelligent". In the speech, Richard first proposed the concept of building a three-phase network. Specifically, there are three driving forces for network development, namely video (100 Mbps network), experience (1 Gbps network), and intelligence (10 Gbps network). In this context, Huawei launched the F5.5G-oriented three-phase all-optical target network architecture: all-optical coverage for 100 Mbps home broadband, all-optical connections extending 1 Gbps to each room, and all-optical computing for 10 Gbps in everywhere. The three-phase construction of the all-optical target network can meet the network connection requirements of active services in each phase, realizing F5.5G and moving towards a smart world.

Phase 1: Video-based all-optical coverage for 100 Mbps home broadband

With the continuous improvement of video resolution and the rapid popularization of video interaction and immersive Video become the main driving force to achieve the goal of building an all-optical network with a home broadband speed of 100Mbps. Operators should fully move towards FMC and replace copper lines and cables with an all-optical FTTH network. . Serialized AirPON can accelerate FTTH construction and support compatibility with GPON and 10G PON, enabling rapid delivery of gigabit services in hotspot areas. Meanwhile, operators should deploy OTN at the metropolitan aggregation layer and build 400G-ready backbone networks with 3D mesh, supporting non-blocking bandwidth and zero video delays. Typical technological innovations in this phase include FlexPON, DQ ODN and high-performance 400G.

Phase 2: Experience-based all-optical connections extending 1 Gbps to rooms

With increasingly diversified digital applications, fibers extend from living rooms to bedrooms, studies and kitchens, enabling click-and-go applications and providing an immersive networking experience. All of these developments place greater requirements on network coverage, bandwidth, latency and roaming. At this stage, users are willing to pay for a more premium home network experience. Therefore, ensuring end-to-end (E2E) service experience becomes the key to achieving the goal of all-optical connections and 1Gbps extended to every room. Operators need to upgrade 10G PON to fully offer gigabit services, introduce fiber to the room (FTTR), 100G OTN to CO metro and 400G trunk-free ultra-wideband. Typical technological innovations in this phase are FTTR, WDM metro pooling and intelligent network management and control system.

Phase 3: Intelligence-based all-optical computing for 10 Gbps everywhere

AI accelerates content manufacturing and promotes the intelligent transformation of industries. To cope with traffic surges and massive data migration to the cloud, a compute-centric network that provides bus-level connection capabilities is required. Similar to the CPU, bus and accessories of a computer, the computing power and storage of the data center (DC) need to exchange information with end users in real time over a high-performance network to achieve the Fully optical computing technology aims for 10 Gbps everywhere.

In this phase, the FTTR-based all-optical home bus supports plug and play of IoT devices and integrates connection, sensing, computing and storage capabilities for 10 Gbps throughout the home. Additionally, the all-optical cloud bus based on 50G PON and 800G OTN implements all-optical single-hop user-DC or DC-DC connections. Typical technological innovations in this phase include 50G PON, all-CO OTN metro and 800G backbone. Additionally, OTN should be designed for DC scenarios. Given this, Huawei launched Kepler, the next-generation OTN platform, offering more than 100T of switching capacity in a single subrack. Leveraging new materials and structures, Kepler reduces power consumption per Gbit by 65% and power usage effectiveness (PUE) to 1.2. It also provides intelligent computing units to comprehensively improve connection efficiency.

The three-phase all-optical destination network can ensure parallel evolution and smooth upgrade from F5G to F5.5G. According to Richard, "Operators need the most suitable all-optical destination network construction solution in different phases of development. So far, 100 Mbps has changed the content, 1 Gbps is changing the broadband experience, and 10 Gbps will change society." Let's work together to bring F5 .5G to reality and move towards a smart world."
