STATEMENT: World Cup Qatar 2022: Brazil champion of digital sustainability

The Karmametrix.com investigation reveals the CO2 emissions of the websites of the national teams that are going to present themselves at the World Cup:

Brazil is the 1st in digital sustainability. Spain is 13th.

MILAN, Nov. 15, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Who is going to win the 2022 world cup? For now we don't know, but from the point of view of the sustainability of the network, the World Cup of digital sustainability was won by Brazil.

Internet sites pollute by emitting CO2; To raise awareness of the topic of "digital pollution", KarmaMetrix.com has measured CO2 emissions from the home pages of the websites of those teams that have qualified to win the FIFA Soccer World Cup in Qatar, simulating the World Cup scoreboard, with the groups and intersections exactly how they are going to be in Qatar.

Among the teams qualified for the World Cup, the site of the Brazilian National Soccer Championship is the most eco-sustainable (55 kg of Co2 per year*), followed by Denmark and Germany (111 kg of Co2 per year*) who complete the podium in On the other hand, among the least virtuous we find the United States in last place in the digital sustainability ranking (6,655 kg of Co2 per year*), followed by Canada (4,521 kg of Co2 per year*) and Switzerland (1,323 kg of Co2 per year*).

Spain, on the other hand, is positioned at 13th place, with an emission of 328 kg of CO2 per year

"Soccer is a global phenomenon. With the World Cup of digital sustainability we want to increase awareness that the Internet also pollutes and is contributing to climate change that is hitting every corner of the planet," says Ale Agostini, founder of Karma Metrix. "These days the COP 27 is played in Egypt but little is said about the Web which, in its complexity, is the 4th country in the world in terms of CO2 emissions: making digital objects more efficient and eco-sustainable means contributing to the fight against climate change. Football and sports can help set a good example."

*Method: The measurements have been made with the KarmaMetrix.com tool on the main pages of the National teams that have accessed the final phase of the World Cup. The measurements have been made between November 1 and 4, 2022, assuming 120,000 views in one year. The recorded emissions can change over time thanks to multiple factors, such as the device or the browser. It has not been possible, for technical reasons related to the sites, to measure the emissions at the sites in Mexico, Uruguay and South Korea.

The list of analyzed pages and the entire method is available at the following address: link

Karma Metrix: It is the 1st digital sustainability journey that some big brands have chosen that measures, compares and improves the environmental impact of a website. The calculation is done through an innovative algorithm (patent pending) that takes into account multiple “on-page” elements of the web page that impact energy efficiency. Each page analyzed is compared to a reference benchmark. The improvement in the end is obtained through the individuation of the areas of energy efficiency at the page and site level.
