World Economic Forum: Davos bans leftist protest

The community of Davos in Switzerland has banned protest of leftist groups during World Economic Forum (WEF). The fresh snow of past few days block streets and public places, it was said in a communication. The "extremely tight space" did not allow a rally.

The petition for protest came from members of Social Democrat Party and Green Party of Switzerland. They wanted to demonstrate on Thursday near station Davos Platz, which is about one kilometer away from venue. The protest should be directed against visit of US President Donald Trump. Trump is scheduled to hold a speech at World Economic Forum on Friday. Every year in Davos, personalities from politics and business meet to debate global issues.

Or demonstrations have also been banned. The community said that demonstrations and freedom of expression were important. However, we expect an understanding of current extraordinary circumstances. In village it snowed for days almost without interruption, metre snow-mountains lined streets. Secondary roads are partly not at all or only lane to ride.

The leader of Young Socialists of Switzerland, Tamara Funiciello, criticized justification for protest ban as threadbare. The demonstration would have been possible if community wanted to allow it, said Funiciello. Instead, authorities of "global elite" would have bowed.

Funiciello announced that her group is now looking for or ways of protest. Some activists want to first demonstrate against Trump on Tuesday – but not in Davos, but in Zurich.
