“Glee” creator Ryan Murphy revealed that there were other actors who didn’t get along on the set of FOX series aside from Lea Michele and Naya Rivera.
In a recent interview for his upcoming FX series “Feud,” Murphy was asked by E! News if there would ever be a season of “Feud” about the much talked-about tension between Michele and Rivera during the later seasons of the musical dramedy. While Murphy was clearly taken aback by the question, the four-time Emmy winner seemingly answered the question in all honesty.
“If you look in the case of Lea and Naya or if you look at any young person, I’m not so much interested in that,” Murphy said. “Because I feel like in the case of that show [‘Glee’], that show was just a s— tstorm of difficulty, largely because, what do you do when you're 18 years old or 19 years old and you wake up one day and you’re world famous? I think a lot of that was informed by their youth and being involved in a phenomenon.”
“And I know for a fact that they [Lea and Naya] admired each other’s work, ‘cause I directed them both in scenes,” Murphy continued. “I don’t think I would take on Lea and Naya. I think for a feud to work on this show, it has to have decades of pain behind it. But if they’re still feuding at 40, I might consider it. I’ll call them up in a couple years.”
Murphy then admitted that he found it a shame that people only write about Michele and Rivera’s fight because as a matter of fact even their male co-stars feuded, too.
“There were many boys on our show that didn't get along,” Murphy revealed. “And you never hear about that. You never hear about that in our culture.” He didn’t mention any names, but he did say that there were a lot of feuds between male cast members of “Glee.”
Rivera confirmed in her book “Sorry Not Sorry: Dreams, Mistakes and Growing Up” that the rumored feud between her and Michele is true but insisted that it was “blown out of proportion.” Rivera wrote that the conflict between him and Michele started when her character, Santana Lopez, became a more prominent character on the show. And because Rivera claimed that Michele — who portrayed Rachel Berry on the series — “didn’t like sharing the spotlight,” the divide between them only got worse.
“If I’d complained about anyone or anything, she’d assumed I was bitching about her,” Rivera wrote. “Soon, she started to ignore me, and eventually it got to the point where she didn’t say a word to me for all of Season 6. Lea and I definitely weren’t the best of friends, and I doubt we’ll ever sit on her couch and eat kale together again.”
While the feud between the two is true, Michele denied rumors that she and Rivera got physical with each other on set.
“It’s really unbelievable the amount of the things that can just be completely made up,” Michele said during her appearance on “Late Show with David Letterman” back in 2014. “I think the way people like to pit women against each other ... it’s really annoying, and it’s really sad.”
