5 budget-friendly things to do in Orlando | Toronto Star

ORLANDO, FLA.-Not everything you do here needs to empty your wallet. Check out these five budget-friendly activities to help fill your days in the city.

Nailae, $4

Orlando is home to the only Nailae machine in Florida. With Nailae, you can download any picture and have it airbrushed on your nails. The machine comes with thousands of pre-downloaded patterns but it also allows your creativity to run wild. For $4 per nail, the customized design will last up to two weeks. The Nailae is available in the Aveda Spa in the bottom of the new B Resort & Spa, and appointments last 15 minutes.

Harry P. Leu Gardens, $10

The 20-hectare garden is a great place to walk, as well as to learn about and absorb Florida nature. The City of Orlando has owned the Harry P. Leu Gardens since Leu donated the space in 1961. “It’s perfect because Orlando sits on the border of tropical and sub-tropical, so we can grow everything,” says director Robert Bowden. The gardens provide tours, cooking classes and movie nights, with films shown on the state’s largest outdoor screen on the first Friday of every month.

Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour, $15

Take a load off and ride inside an 18-passenger boat that coasts through the scenic waters of three of the Winter Park lakes. Less than 10 minutes from downtown Orlando, you’ll cruise through the manmade canals for an hour and will have the chance to see cranes, alligators and the state’s most beautiful wild flowers. The Winter Park Scenic Boat Tours are open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily and are cash or cheque only.

I-Drive 360, $20

I-Drive 360 is three attractions in one, surrounded by shops and restaurants. Purchase your ticket online and you can visit Madame Tussauds wax museum, ride the Orlando Eye ferris wheel or tour the Sea Life aquarium for $20 (a pass to visit all three attractions costs $50). Sea Life’s glass tunnel leads to the aquarium, where you can pose questions to a scuba-diving staff member while he or she is underwater with the eels, turtles, sharks and other fish.

East End Market, $25

With 15 local vendors, the East End Market is a hub for food and culture. With $25, I bought a strawberry jalapeno kombucha, a citrus soap, two canisters of popcorn green tea, a ceramic sushi plate and a giant chocolate chip pistachio cookie. That giant half-pound cookie came from the newly opened Gideon’s Bakehouse, which has been selling out in less than an hour every day — try one of these mounds of cookie if you get the chance, they’re worth every calorie.
