49ers camp: Anthony Davis returns to field for first time since 2014

SANTA CLARA -- Anthony Davis wore his No. 76 jersey Sunday for the first time since 2014 and practiced with a healthier mind and body, which he attributed to last season's self-imposed sabbatical.

Davis lined up as the third-string right tackle in the 49ers first practice of training camp and "felt like I was on a highway" in coach Chip Kelly's fast-break offense.

Davis' comeback drew the widespread support of his teammates, including left tackle Joe Staley and general manager Trent Baalke, both of whom were targets of Davis' social-media criticism in recent months.

"We talked about everything man to man, got past it and now we're on the same page," Davis said.

Davis had called Staley's play "soft" and also ripped the 49ers' brass, saying he didn't want to play for a manipulative franchise that doesn't want to win as bad as he does.

"We have had all the conversations we need," Staley said. "We've worked out everything we needed to work out."

Baalke and Davis both described their relationship as "special," acknowledging they often have disagreements but understand each other. On his criticism of Baalke and the 49ers, Davis said: "That was me trying to manipulate emotions to get what I wanted, at that time."

Whether that was to get traded, Davis wouldn't say. Baalke's reaction: "I'm hard to manipulate. ... Everything is very positive at this point, and it's about blending back in and going to work."

Coach Chip Kelly and several teammates praised Davis for what he agreed is the best shape of his life.

"I last played at about 365, 370 (pounds). Right now I'm 332," Davis said. "I don't know how I played at that weight, either."

When last season started without him, Davis didn't regret his June decision to take a sabbatical. "I didn't miss it right away," Davis said. "I had a lot of work to do on my mind and body, so I knew I wasn't ready to come back and play."

Kelly said he told Davis he has a "blank slate, just like ever other player and just like every other coach here. We're all new."

Trent Brown and John Theus were Sunday's first- and second-string right tackles, while Erik Pears relieved Staley at left tackle on the second string.

Davis' had to return an unknown portion of his signing bonus while sitting out last year, an amount he only would describe as "a lot."

"I'm here, happy and moving forward."
