Michel Hofman will be the new chief of defence. The vice-admiral of 59 years is the former commander of the navy and the deputy chief of the defense since June 2007. Number two from the army, he goes number one.

Hofman was the only francophone among the candidates, but he is perfectly bilingual. He was born in Oostende in 1961 and began his training at the royal military academy in 1978.
