Dean Skelos might get to work on his tan before going to prison

Looks like disgraced ex-state Senator Dean Skelos might be getting the summer off — from jail.

Prosecutors with Manhattan US Attorney Preet Bharara’s office on Monday said they’re OK with waiting for a potentially pivotal Supreme Court decision to be handed down before arguing whether Skelos and his ne’er-do-well son Adam should be allowed to remain out of jail pending appeal of their corruption convictions.

The US Supreme Court has until the end of June to decide whether or not to overturn the corruption conviction of former Virginia governor Bob McDonnell, who took money and gifts from people who were seeking to influence him.

That means the government will only begin to argue the question of whether the Skeloses should get bail pending appeal at that time.

Skelos was sentenced to five years in the clink for using his power to get his son no-show jobs. Adam was sentenced to six-and-a-half years.

McDonnell’s case raises questions about whether its OK for politicians to accept gifts from people who want to influence them so long as the gifts are not in exchange for official actions, like legislation.

Convicted ex-Assembly Speaker man Sheldon Silver has also asked for bail pending appeal, citing the McDonnell case.

Silver, who was ordered to 12 years in prison, is currently slated to turn himself in by July 1st.
