Garfield Heights boy charged in Akron carjacking

AKRON, Ohio -- A Garfield Heights boy is charged in a Saturday carjacking in Akron's Highland Square neighborhood, police said.

The 14-year-old boy faces juvenile charges of aggravated robbery, theft and carrying a concealed weapon in the incident that happened just after 11:30 p.m. on North Portage Path near Dopler Street, according to a police report.

A man had just parked his car in his garage when the boy approached and pulled out a gun. The man tried to drive away, but his foot slipped off the pedal, the report says.

The boy opened the driver-side door and forced the man to get out. The boy then got into the car and drove off, the man told police.

Officers found the boy and the car a short time later in an empty lot on Gordon Drive. The man identified the boy, and officers took him into custody, the report says.

The boy remains in custody at the Summit County Juvenile Detention Center, police said Monday.
