Inmate dies while in custody in Hernando

BROOKSVILLE — Hernando County sheriff's officials on Friday said an inmate at the Hernando County Detention Center had died, but released little other information.

Gary Jeffrey Roberts, 30, of New Port Richey was taken into custody Feb. 3 for failing to appear in court. He had been due in court in connection with a December grand theft arrest, according to jail records.

After suffering a "medical episode," the Sheriff's Office said, Roberts was taken to Bayfront Health Brooksville, where he was later pronounced dead.

Details about Roberts' death remained unclear, including when Roberts was taken to the hospital, when he was pronounced dead, what type of medical episode he had and whether foul play was suspected.

A sheriff's spokeswoman on Friday afternoon would not answer any questions, stating that the investigation was still open.
