Oakland A's place Sonny Gray on disabled list

OAKLAND -- A's ace Sonny Gray was placed on the disabled list Sunday with what the team is calling a strained right trapezius.

Gray said he doesn't believe that the injury to his shoulder and neck area is serious and would be surprised if his D.L. stint is longer than 15 days.

"Hopefully when these 15 days are up, we never look back from there," Gray said.

Gray has lost his past four decisions, with an ERA of 10.38 over his past five starts.

He said he began getting treatment before his start against Tampa Bay on May 15.

"It felt OK the whole game and I went through the whole week, threw a bullpen," he said. "It felt OK, just nagging a little bit. Warming up against the Yankees the last game, the first warm-up pitch in the fourth inning, it kind of locked back up again, the way it kind of did in the bullpen in Tampa. We just made a decision to try to knock this thing out as quick as possible."

Gray gave up five runs in the fourth inning Friday against the Yankees and was pulled after 31/3 innings. He said he received a shot of cortisone and anti-inflammatories after the start Friday.

"It's a little stiff now, but it feels much better," he said.

Gray added he will probably start playing catch again in three or four days and go from there.

The injury is the latest blow to the team's starting rotation. Chris Bassitt underwent Tommy John elbow-ligament replacement surgery two weeks ago.

"It's unfortunate," Gray said. "We've had some things, injuries, nicks and things not really go our way. I think that's why we kind of made the decision -- do you knock this thing out now and come back in 15 days and feel strong and your body feels a little refreshed and everything. I think it will be a huge benefit in the long run."

Oakland recalled left-hander Daniel Coulombe from Triple-A Nashville to take Gray's spot.
