Police ID officers in fatal shooting

Three police officers, each with more than 25 years on the Columbus force, have been identified in connection with last week’s fatal shooting of a homicide suspect on the East Side.

Officers Stephen Galiffo, James Sandford and Anthony Rogers were involved in the death of 20-year-old Jacquarius M. Robinson on Friday morning behind a home on Knollwood Drive, police said today in a news release.

Robinson was suspected in the shooting death of Damion D. Wade, 21, shortly before 1 a.m. on Friday at an apartment complex in the 1800 block of Fountainview Court on the Far East Side.

Galiffo is a 29-year veteran on the Columbus force, Sandford has been with the department for 27 years, and Rogers for 26-years. Galiffo and Sandford are both SWAT officers, and Rogers is assigned to the canine unit.

Police have said that, shortly before 11 a.m. on Friday, a plainclothes officer saw Robinson exit a home on Knollwood and place a handgun in his jacket. Robinson ran when a marked canine unit tried to stop him.

Police spokesman Sgt. Rick Weiner said Galiffo, Sandford and Rogers chased the suspect into a backyard of a home in the 1300 block of Knollwood. Witnesses told officers that they heard police yell for someone to stop running, then heard gunshots. They did not see the shooting.

Robinson was pronounced dead at the scene.

A handgun was found, police said. The officers were not injured.

Wade's death is the 71st homicide in Columbus in 2016.

Robinson was the 14th person shot by police this year and the third person fatally shot to death by police since June.
