Scott Kelly, astronaut who spent 340 consecutive days in space, to speak at CU

Scott Kelly, the now-retired astronaut who spent nearly a year in space, will speak at the University of Colorado next month.

He's scheduled to speak at CU's Macky Auditorium on Oct. 3, and tickets will go on sale Sept. 17.

During his career, Kelly served as the commander of the International Space Station and as a U.S. Navy captain. He also holds the U.S. record for the most consecutive days in space, which he achieved after spending 340 days on the International Space Station in 2015 and 2016.

He will participate in a moderated Q&A after his speech at CU, and audience members will be encouraged to submit questions on Facebook and Twitter using #KellyCU.

Kelly is among a number of speakers who have come to campus thanks to the Distinguished Speakers Board, a student-led organization. Past speakers include CNN anchor Anderson Cooper, actress and transgender rights advocate Laverne Cox and government contractor-turned-leaker Edward Snowden.

"Kelly is a highly distinguished speaker and astronaut, who has captivated the world while laying the groundwork for future space travel and exploration," student Jessica Yan, chair of the Distinguished Speakers Board, stated in a CU news release Tuesday. "Kelly, with his humor and wit, will share the extraordinary story of his 143-million-mile adventure and year spent in space."

Student tickets will cost $2, and faculty and staff tickets will cost $15. Tickets will be sold weekdays in the University Memorial Center until Oct. 2 or until they are sold out. Public tickets will cost $25 and will be sold at colorado.edu/macky.
