SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio -- City Council has approved a new labor contract with local firefighters that provides 2 percent raises in each of the next three years.

Running through 2018 and covering 50 union members, the collective bargaining agreement was ratified by the International Association of Firefighters, AFL-CIO, Local 516 on May 10.

The firefighter contract, which mirrors the one inked earlier this year with the city's 52 rank-and-file police officers, was then presented to council for approval at a special morning session on May 16.

Counting pension "roll-up" contributions, the annual 2 percent raises will cost the city an additional $337,420 spread over the three-year duration, including $110,250 this year for firefighters.

The police contract adds up to about $154,000 a year, or roughly $462,000 over three years.

Some of the firefighters' raises salaries will be paid retroactively, since their previous contract expired at the end of last year and they have been working without one since.

Like the police contract, health care provisions in the latest agreement continue to call for firefighters to contribute 15 percent each for premiums and co-pays.

As with police and the Public Works Department, firefighters opting out of family plan health insurance will now be entitled to receive $275 per month instead of $250.

Language relating to the Kaiser-HealthSpan plan will be deleted because that coverage is being phased out, and the city will continue to look for a comparable replacement plan.

A uniform and equipment allowance, administered by Fire Chief Patrick Sweeney directly to suppliers, will be increased from $800 to $1,000 per year.

In recent contracts, firefighters had received a personal day that will now be administered in the same manner as vacation time.

Mayor Earl Leiken, who assisted with negotiations, also cited a new incentive for firefighters hired after January 1, 2003, with academic degrees in areas directly related to fire services.

As a result, firefighters may be eligible for one-time bonuses of $2,000 for an associate's degree and $4,000 for a bachelor's degree.

With the cost of living adjustments ("COLA") in the new contract, the starting pay for firefighters is now $54,679.
