From 2019, high school students should only graduate at the end of the 13th grade. NRW schools can also decide against this change.

Abitur: North Rhine-Westphalia decides nine-year high school

The black-yellow provincial government in North Rhine-Westphalia has decided on a bill to return to Abitur after nine years (G9). It is to be adopted by Landtag before summer holidays. Thus, students who start school year 2019/20 with gymnasium will again make ir Abitur within nine years. The older vintages should continue to finish ir secondary school period in eight years.

The previous eight-year high school (G8) will not be abolished in course of this reform. Both models can be offered at request of individual grammar schools. Up to full changeover, provincial government expects a demand of some 2,200 additional teacher positions.

The eight-year-old gymnasium was introduced in North Rhine-Westphalia to school year 2005/06 by n black-yellow provincial government with agreement of all Landtag parties. Many or federal states also went this step at time; However, some have returned to nine-year high school again in full or in part. Finally Bayern introduced G9 again.
