After a series of acts of violence between refugees and Germans, thousands of people have demonstrated against refugee policy in Cottbus. According to observers, more than 2,000 people have followed call of xenophobic association’s future homeland, initiators mselves speak of at least 5,000 persons.

The demonstrators warned against alienation of Germany. Among or things, resignation of Chancellor Angela Merkel was called for in transparency, ors called “Islamization as greatest danger to mankind”. Brandenburg’s Constitutional guards evaluate association as an “asylum-critical initiative”.

Hundreds demonstrating for cosmopolitanism

At same time, hundreds of tolerances went to streets in Cottbus downtown. Under motto “Life Without hatred – toger against fear” participants demanded a peaceful cooperation. The demonstration for a cosmopolitan city was attended by about 600 people according to police figures. As rally set in motion, re was furr influx.

The Brandenburg Action Alliance had called for counter-demonstration – Association of Refugees and supporters was concerned that recent incidents were used to “fuel mood with a xenophobic campaign”. Fugitives would be dismissed as a lump-sum as violent offenders, it is stated in announcement.

Both events remained “calm and relaxed”, a police spokesperson shared. In six cases, police had taken up personalities and a man was taken into custody, who repeatedly showed Hitler salute.

The situation in Cottbus was last tense. In city centre re were repeatedly violent clashes between German and asylum seekers. In front of a shopping centre, Syrian youth attacked a couple, and on New Year’s Eve refugees were attacked by unknown people in ir accommodation. Last Wednesday, right-wing extremists distributed pepper ampoules among passers-by. The men gave flyers with logo of NPD. The Brandenburg constitutional protection and State ministry extreme right-wing scene in region as “highly violent”.

The police increased ir presence due to tense situation, and Cottbus did not take up any more refugees for time being.
