After passage of Storm Burglind, many parts of Germany are affected by floods. The situation was particularly critical at night on Friday in Black Forest town of St. Blass, where rain and thaw led to floods and landslides. On Upper Rhine in Baden-Württemberg shipping was stopped. At Karlsruhe, level in morning exceeded critical mark of 7.50 meters for cruise. This weekend it could also come to Rhine downhill near Cologne so far. Furr mobile protective walls were built in south of Cologne.

On Rhine tributaries Neckar and Mosel, shipping had been discontinued before. On Moselle, water level at Trier level rose at night over critical eight-metre mark. In Heidelberg B37 is locked at historic Old Town, because Neckar has stepped over banks.

In St. Blass in high Black Forest, a catastrophic alarm was imminent. In some places, slopes slipped off. About 150 people were brought to a gymnasium at night, most of m were able to return to ir homes by morning.

During day situation in Baden-Württemberg was relaxed. The state ministry warned, however, that due to durchnässter soils and high water levels, next few days re could be landslides, falling trees and fully-running cellars. Shore areas and forests should not be entered.

The German wear service expected furr rain in Black Forest for Friday, with some up to 120 liters per square metre. In addition, snow masses in high altitudes quickly melt away due to mild temperatures. In Allgäu, runoff volumes from 50 to 100 liters per square metre were expected by Friday evening. The snow-fall border also climbs up to about 1,800 meters on Alps.

Three-digit million damage caused by Burglind

For Saturday, meteorologists in west and in middle of Germany were expecting rain. However, quantities did not require any wear warnings.

On Wednesday, storm Burglind had brought hurricane-like gusts and whipping rain in parts of Germany. According to initial estimates, first storm of new year left three-digit million losses.
