Man gets probation for assault during restaurant robbery

SALEM -- The man charged in a robbery that left at least one person injured at a popular county restaurant has been sentenced to probation, according to court records.

Joseph T. Robinson III was sentenced to probation for assault, officials say. (Salem County Correctional Facility)

Joseph T. Robinson III, 23, of Salem, was arrested Aug. 3 after an incident at The Orient on South Broadway in Pennsville, authorities said.

Pennsville police at the time said they were called to the parking lot of the restaurant around 8:30 a.m. to investigate the report of a robbery in progress.

When they got there they found a man with cuts to his face.

Robinson was located a short time later inside a convenience store with cuts on his hands, authorities said. He also had in his possession cellphones and cigarettes reported stolen from staff at the restaurant.

He was originally charged with robbery, terroristic threats, theft, aggravated assault and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Robinson appeared in Superior Court in Salem last week where he was sentenced on the single charge of aggravated assault to four years of probation.

The sentence was part of a plea agreement with the Salem County Prosecutor's Office.

He's also liable for court fines and penalties.
