MWC 2017: Huawei Watch 2 Launch Teased In New Photo

Huawei’s chief executive, Richard Yu, has confirmed that the second-generation Huawei Watch will be announced at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The original Huawei Watch was first announced in 2015, and it served as the company’s very first smartwatch. It featured an AMOLED display, Bluetooth, WiFi, Google services and ran Android Wear. The wearable was generally received well, but its rather small 300 mAh battery was probably its worst hardware spec.

In December 2015, rumors began popping up about the Huawei Watch 2, with reports claiming that Huawei was in preparation to launch the device in late 2016. However, the device’s release was delayed when due to Android Wear 2.0’s release being delayed as well, according to 9To5Google.

Google launched Android Wear 2.0 just last week, while also debuting two new smartwatches from LG. Now, it looks like Huawei will be competing in the smartwatch market again as Huawei’s head of consumer business just teased the Huawei Watch 2 on the Chinese social media site Weibo.

Yu uploaded a teaser image for the second generation Android Wear smartwatch. The photo doesn’t clearly show the device itself, but it does heavily imply that the new wearable is focused on fitness features. Yu also included #HuaweiWatch2 and #MWC2017 on his text post.

Rumors from last month claim that the Huawei Watch 2 will come with a “sportier” look. The Watch 2 is also said to come with an independent cellular connectivity. There will apparently be a version of the device that comes with a built-in SIM card to allow data connection and will let users receive and make calls, according to VentureBeat.

Huawei will have its hands full at MWC 2017. This Monday, the company confirmed via Twitter that it will be showcasing its new flagship smartphone, the Huawei P10, at the very same event. The company is expected to launch the Huawei Watch 2 and the P10 smartphone during its press briefing on Feb. 26.
