The ex-wife of former South African President Nelson Mandela died. Winnie Madikizela-Mandela had fought against apartheid in South Africa.

South Africa: Winnie Madikizela-Mandela is dead

Winnie Mandela, ex-wife of South Africa's freedom fighter and former President Nelson Mandela, is dead. She died at age of 81 in hospital Netcare Milpark in Johannesburg, as her family shared. Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was second wife of first black president of South Africa, who died in 2013.

In January, Winnie Mandela was hospitalized with kidney problems. She was a veteran in fight against aparid. Because of her commitment to aparid regime, she had been under house arrest for several years.

The later Nobel Peace Prize laureate Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison for his fight against aparid, and in his release in 1990 he was received by Winnie. However, couple had become estranged during prison period and separated in 1992, after 38 years of marriage followed in 1996 divorce.

She was also controversial because of scandals and her appearance. Winnie Mandela was sentenced to six years in prison in 1991 for kidnapping and aiding assault of four black adolescents, but was fined in appeal. As a Member of Parliament, Madikizela-Mandela was convicted of fraud.
