Browns' quarterback competition tilts toward Robert Griffin III

BEREA, Ohio -- If there's a quarterback competition going on at the Cleveland Browns' training camp, it's certainly not easy to see.

For the third time in three practices, Robert Griffin III got all the work with the starting unit.

So if there is a competition, it's taking place between Josh McCown and the backups.

Anything can happen, of course, but it certainly seems clear that the Browns' plans include Griffin as the starter. Or at least, they want him to start.

Sunday was the first day in pads, and the highlight was a deep throw from Griffin that Terrelle Pryor fought to catch. Pryor maneuvered underneath Jamar Taylor to come back for the ball and made the catch falling to the ground. He punctuated the catch by getting up and spiking the ball with great gusto. It was not a great pass -- inside and short. The success of the play relied a little more on Pryor than it did Griffin, but Griffin did get the ball some 50 yards downfield to allow Pryor to make a play.

On a day with two periods of live hitting and tackling, the defense had the edge. Griffin's first two snaps in 11-on-11 resulted in him looking to two spots on the field, then throwing a swing pass to Isaiah Crowell into the ground. On the next play, he again looked to two spots before running. Had the defensive players been allowed to tackle the quarterback, the play would have resulted in a sack.

Coach Hue Jackson's timetable to name a starter before the preseason opener means a decision will be made by Aug. 12, which leaves seven practices and one scrimmage at Ohio State before the decision is announced.
