When news broke of Stephen Strasburg's seven-year, $175 million contract with the Washington Nationals, every pitcher in baseball had to take notice.
Not just because of the big dollar amount, but because of what it represented: The largest deal ever given to a pitcher post-Tommy John surgery. For four members of the Mets vaunted rotation (including a mending Zack Wheeler), Tommy John is in the rear-view mirror.
Eventually, the Mets will have to make decisions on the future deals for a slew of talented arms that are, in this way, similar to Strasburg.
First up: Matt Harvey, after the 2018 season.
Watch the video above for my thoughts on how much the Strasburg deal will factor into Harvey's eventual negotiations, how similar they are and what Harvey could garner on the open market when free agency arrives.
