Riley Fisbeck drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning Monday to give top-ranked La Grange a 6-5 victory over Huffman Hargrave in the deciding game of a Class 4A playoff series.

With the victory at Mumford High School, the Lady Leopards advanced to face Waco Robinson (31-0-1) in the 4A regional semifinals. The best-of-three softball series will begin at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Liberty Hill High School.

La Grange (35-2) outlasted the team that knocked them out of last year’s playoffs in the same round. Hargrave, the defending 4A state champion, erased a 5-3 deficit by scoring two runs in the top of the seventh.

Briana Angel led off La Grange’s seventh with a double to right, and she moved to third when Amber Loehr’s sacrifice bunt was bobbled by Hargrave pitcher Megan Unroe. Fisbeck, a senior third baseman who has signed with the Texas Longhorns volleyball program, followed with a single down the right-field line to score Angel.

La Grange won the first game of the series 8-0 but lost 3-1 in eight innings in Game 2 at Magnolia High School. Rain on Saturday led the third game of the series to be postponed until Monday with La Grange leading 2-0 after two innings.

“We wanted revenge after they won state last year,” said Missy Zoch, the winning pitcher Monday. “Honestly, I think these were the two best teams in the state (in Class 4A).”

BASEBALL

Lake Travis 2, Humble Kingwood 1: Brad Demco’s squeeze bunt in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Dylan Bryant with the winning run, allowing Lake Travis to complete a two-game sweep of a Class 6A area-round playoff series.

The Cavaliers (30-2-1) will face Conroe Oak Ridge in a best-of-three regional quarterfinal series that opens at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Mumford High School.

After Lake Travis won the series opener 1-0 Friday night at Kingwood as Demco tossed a complete-game shutout, heavy rain led to Game 2 being shifted from Lake Travis to Waco, where it started about 10 p.m. Saturday.

Shortly after midnight, Demco came to the plate to face Kingwood starter Thomas Allison, who had fanned nine batters and given up just four hits. Demco delivered a bunt that dropped inches in front of Allison’s glove, who made a diving effort to catch the ball before it touched the grass. After corralling the ball, Allison popped up off the grass to claim a catch while Bryant raced across home plate.

As Kingwood’s players and coaches disputed the call, the umpires gathered for a conference and quickly agreed that the ball had hit the ground before Allison scooped it up.

“It bounced,” Demco said. “Their coach tried to argue, but I saw it — it bounced.”
