Marion Marauder gives Big M’s top driver his 1st Hambletonian

Marion Marauder won the 91st edition of the Hambletonian Saturday at the Meadowlands, giving Meadowlands’ leading driver Scott Zeron his first victory in the sport’s top event.

Trained by Paula Wellwood, Marion Marauder (5-2) scored a nose victory over Southwind Frank in 1:51 4/5. Sutton finished third.

Zeron pulled Marion Marauder from fifth on the rail as the field past the halfway point.

“I wanted to get a good two, three-length cushion on the field, but I know my horse better,” Zeron said. “I should have waited and waited to pull the trigger because when he gets clear of them sometimes he’ll wander and he was just not paying attention, but he stuck his nose out and got there.”

This was Zeron’s first Hambletonian drive and the first victory for Wellwood, who had only one previous starter.

“I was just cheering him on,” Wellwood said. “I thought it was too close to call at the finish line, it was so tight. It was a great race, and Southwind Frank deserves a lot of credit.”

Marion Marauder paid $7.00 to win.

Earlier, trainer Jimmy Takter and driver Yannick Gingras won the $500,000 Hambletonian Oaks with All The Time to score a natural hat trick yesterday afternoon at the Meadowlands.

All the Time paid $9.20 to win.

The $273,600 John Cashman Memorial was won by Resolve, the 6-5 favorite, by 1 ¼ lengths over Obrigado in 1:50 2/5 . Flanagan Memory was third. Resolve, trained and driven by Ake Svanstedt, paid $4.40 to win.
