Mets 'really concerned' about injured Asdrubal Cabrera

NEW YORK — Mets shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera left Sunday afternoon's game against the Colorado Rockies in a lot of pain after injuring his left knee in the first inning, and manager Terry Collins later said he is "really concerned" considering it's the same knee Cabrera injured in spring training that cost him a few weeks.

"We didn't have to carry him off the field in spring training—I'm really concerned about it until he sees the doctor tomorrow," Collins said after the Mets' 6-4 win. "He was in a lot of pain, a lot more than I've ever seen ... I'm really concerned right now."

Cabrera hurt his knee while rounding third base in the bottom of the first while scoring on second baseman Neil Walker's triple to right field. Cabrera hobbled home but couldn't make it to the dugout and had to be carried into the clubhouse by coaches and training staff. (Cabrera was not available to reporters after the game.)

As Collins said, Cabrera will see the doctor Monday, but this could be a debilitating injury for the Mets—backup shortstop Jose Reyes was placed on the 15-day disabled list this weekend with a Grade 1 left intercostal strain and will be out at least another week and a half (the DL stint is backdated to July 26).

Mets to add a bat before trade deadline?

Cabrera is one of the Mets who are actually hitting this season -- 13 home runs, .720 OPS -- and it may force New York to A) sign someone hurriedly before Monday's 4 p.m. trade deadline, B) wait and have to claim someone on waivers after Aug. 1, or C) bring up someone from Triple-A.

"My first thought was when it happened was Matt Reynolds, only cause he's played shortstop and played pretty well up here, but I have no idea where [general manager Sandy Alderson] is leaning yet," Collins said. (Reynolds is at Triple-A Las Vegas right now.)

An absence by Cabrera would likely put Wilmer Flores at shortstop (he moved there Sunday after the injury), and Reynolds would play third mixed with Kelly Johnson, who's on the 25-man roster now. Flores said Sunday he felt "really far from home plate" while at short:

With Cabrera hypothetically out, Walker remains the only Opening Day infield starter still standing—first baseman Lucas Duda, third baseman David Wright, and now Cabrera (maybe) are out. Concerning, indeed.
