RIO DE JANEIRO – Sam Mikulak and Team USA advanced to Monday’s Olympic men’s gymnastics team final with a solid performance in Saturday's qualifying round at Rio Olympic Arena.
The U.S. leads the qualifying round after two of three sub-divisions with 270.405 points, ahead of reigning World champion Japan at 269.294.
Mikulak, of Newport Beach, also qualified for next week's individual all-around final. Mikulak is fourth in the individual standings at 89.041 with a rotation to go.
Mikulak actually led the all-around competition after four rotations before running into trouble on the pommel horse, Team USA's fifth apparatus.
