When will Yankees' Mark Teixeira return?

NEW YORK — The injury bug has chomped several bites out of the Yankees over the last seven days, but it sounds like there's some good news: first baseman Mark Teixeira, who missed Tuesday's game with neck spasms, is feeling better.

"These things usually happen on dives at first base or slides," Teixeira said late Tuesday night. "Something that kind of jams your shoulder or jams you neck. You wake up and it's sore, and it just got progressively worse the past week."

The Yanks' first baseman said the injury probably happened last week sometime in Baltimore, a tweak that he said "needed to get taken care of," and spent the whole day off the field and in the trainer's room getting treatment on it.

It sounds like there's a chance he'll be back Wednesday, but with Dustin Ackley playing well in his absence, it's likely manager Joe Girardi will keep him out another day. Teixeira is 36, after all, and a game in May isn't the most important thing in the world.

Teixeira, who has four hits in his last 37 at-bats, said he didn't want to blame this bad 2016 season (.202 overall, three homers) on an injury.

"Probably (an effect), but I'm not going to use it as an excuse because I haven't had a good month," Teixeira said. "It's one of those things, when you start altering your swing because of the neck, you want to take care of it. And that's what we're doing right now."

Manager Joe Girardi characterized his team's injuries as the "Walking Wounded" on Tuesday, as outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury, designated hitter Alex Rodriguez, and lefty CC Sabathia are all out with various injuries, the latter two on the 15-day disabled list. (Ellsbury may play this week, but don't be surprised by a disabled list stint, which they can backdate to last Friday.)
