Investors remain concerned about Ukraine tensions, but the Yen is up for the week

On Friday, the safe-haven Japanese yen gained ground against the dollar as President Joe Biden stated that Moscow was preparing a pretext for an attack on Ukraine. He also supported the Swiss Franc and hurt bitcoin.

Investors remain concerned about Ukraine tensions, but the Yen is up for the week

The dollar rose 0.1% to 115.025 yen in afternoon New York trading. The dollar fell 0.4% against the Japanese currency for the week. This was its largest weekly percentage drop in over a month. The dollar was 0.1% higher at 0.9212 Swiss Francs, another safe haven.

Fears of a Russian invasion of Ukraine have also prompted increased demand for safe-haven bond, with Treasury yields falling on Friday.

Russian-backed separatists in Ukraine claimed on Friday that they would evacuate the residents of their region to Russia. U.S. Secretary Antony Blinken stated that the Russians are using the events in the border area in the last two days to inflict false provocations.

Investor jitters were relieved by news that Blinken accepted an invitation to meet with Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister, late next week.

"Everyone is obsessed with what has happened in Ukraine. There is a lot of anxiety. Everyone wants to see some deescalation, but it doesn't seem that way," stated Edward Moya from Oanda, New York, senior market analyst.

"The trade was about safe havens and it's been an amazing week for the Japanese currency. The yen is slightly weaker today, but there is still concern about the long weekend and the rhetoric from Russia." he stated.

The Russian rouble fell 1.26% against the greenback at 77.30 per dollar.

At $1.1329 the euro fell 0.3% against the dollar, while the U.S. Dollar index rose 0.3%.

Bitcoin fell to $40,025, last week by 1.3%
