Germain Street Elementary School in Chatsworth was briefly placed on lockdown Monday while police attempted to find a home burglary suspect.

A burglary was reported at 12:45 p.m. Monday at a home at the intersection of Lurline Avenue and San Jose Street, said Los Angeles Police Department Sgt. Kevin Hawn.

The owner of a home returned to his house, caught the burglars in the act and “armed himself,” according to Hawn, holding one of the suspects at bay before police arrived about 10 minutes later.

Two suspects were taken into custody, but a third suspect was believed to have escaped into the neighborhood.

An earlier report of a shooting was incorrect, Hawn added.

LAPD officers set up a perimeter at Lurline Avenue and San Jose Street to find the suspect around 1 p.m. which resulted in the lockdown of the school, Hawn said. The school is at 20730 Germain Street.

Los Angeles Unified School District spokeswoman Barbara Jones said the elementary school was no longer on lockdown as of 2:05 p.m.

Hawn later said three people were in custody as of 2:15 p.m. and police were searching a nearby commercial area for a possible fourth suspect.
