Seattle Mayor Ed Murray, going where the state Attorney General has successfully trod, says he wants to sue President Trump if the city can't get answers about formulation of the President's executive orders.
Seattle is even planning to give the White House the deadline of 20 business days to answer questions about possible retaliation against sanctuary cities and the Obama administration's DACA program that allowed young undocumented immigrants to remain in the United States.
"We believe the rule of law is on our side, and we will take legal action if the federal government does not answer our requests in a timely manner," Murray will say in his State of the City speech, to be delivered at Seattle's Idris Mosque.
The Mayor's speech has yet not been made available to Seattle-area media, but -- with an eye to the national stage -- Hizzoner provided an advance copy to the Politico website in the "other" Washington.
Murray is up for reelection this fall.
Murray is the latest Washington politician to seek the national stage. Attorney General Bob Ferguson successfully sued to block the President's travel crackdown order. Ferguson is low key, but cable TV viewers across the country have gotten a dose of the hyperbole of Gov. Jay Inslee.
Murray is seizing on detention of a 23-year-old who came to Seattle as a child, is covered under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, but was detained last week.
Daniel Medina has no criminal record, but the feds have alleged -- without evidence -- gang ties.
"The city must be able to provide accurate information to immigrants and refugees and their families living in Seattle," Murray will say. "We will seek to determine the administration's definition of 'sanctuary cities' and the enforcement actions the federal government may take against us.
"We will also seek detailed information about the administration's changes to travel policy as well as changes to immigration status, including the DACA program."
