Woman, 19, swept into ocean at Sonoma Coast beach dies

A 19‑year‑old woman swept off a rock at a Sonoma Coast beach Monday has died and the Sonoma County Coroner’s Office Tuesday identified her as a Fairfield resident.

Victoria Alvarez was with several others in a group at Schoolhouse Beach near Bodega Bay when five were knocked into the ocean by large waves. Four made it back, found that Alvarez wasn’t with them and called for help at 1:35 p.m., according to authorities.

A California State Parks lifeguard arrived within five minutes. The woman wasn’t visible from shore and the lifeguard and a Bodega Bay firefighter donned special gear and went into the water. Within 15 minutes she was found, floating facedown and unconscious.

The Sonoma County sheriff’s helicopter lifted her to shore and she was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
