Catalonia: Constitutional Court stops election Puigdemonts

The Spanish Constitutional Court has tipped planned election Carles Puigdemonts to regional president of Catalonia for time being. At request of Spanish Government, court provisionally suspended a legislative reform of Catalan parliament, which should allow election of Puigdemonts in absence of candidate.

The government of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy had decided to call Constitutional Court shortly before at an extraordinary cabinet meeting. Puigdemont was a "justice fugitive", said government spokesman Iñigo Méndez de Vigo. His election in absentia was illegal.

A final decision by Constitutional Court may take months to pass. If KeinRegionalpräsident is elected until 22nd of May, it is zuNeuwahlen in Catalonia.

Since election in December, when Catalan separatists received majority, four attempts at forming a government in region failed. The nominated candidates eir stayed in exile abroad or sat in custody.

Puigdemont had fled to Belgium after he had declared independence of Catalonia in October, n as current regional president of Catalonia. In Germany he was arrested before Easter at transit and imprisoned in Neumünster. At beginning of April, German prison was released.
