CDU: CDU debates its future

After conclusion of coalition negotiations with CSU and SPD, demands for a personnel renewal of party also increased in CDU. CDU Bundestag MEP Klaus-Peter Willsch called on his party to stop at time after Merkel's chancellorship. Schleswig-Holstein's Prime minister Daniel Günr demanded a rejuvenation of federal cabinet. Meanwhile, CDU bureau member Jens Spahn already sees Christian Democrats well positioned.

Günr said in German funk that CDU chairwoman Merkel now has chance to "provide for new faces" in formation of cabinets. There must be a rejuvenation, as CDU is at moment facing a historical process: "Because it has never been possible to organize within a chancellorship that a party also has a government perspective beyond time of a chancellor," said 44- Year.

In past, party was "far too rested" to have Merkel "in principle all tasks" transferred, said Günr. Merkel is not just a party leader and chancellor, "it was best to represent all different wings of union." At same time, Prime minister stressed that Merkel should remain chancellor and CDU chairman for entire legislature.

"We are not in a monarchy"

In Austrian press on Sunday, Spahn spoke out in favour of competition for top positions in party, "when it is so far". "We are not in a monarchy, in which one regulates its own succession," said Spahn: "When it is ready, candidates will also have to prevail." Spahn belongs to conservative wing of CDU and was repeatedly traded as a candidate for chancellorship of post-Merkel era.

He sees his party staffed for time after Merkel, Spahn said furr. The CDU has good people everywhere, such as Saxon Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer, Thuringia's CDU chief Mike Mohring, deputy Federal president Julia Klöckner, as well as Bundestag members Paul Ziemiak and Carsten Linnemann. When asked wher re were candidates who could also take helm immediately, Spahn replied: "In my experience, someone has always found out when it was ready." Ziemiak, who is also chairman of Young Union, said, with a view to personnel renewal of party, he expects a clear signal from Merkel to CDU party congress at end of February.

On Sunday evening, Merkel will directly ask questions about planned new edition of Grand Coalition on ZDF broadcast Berlin. Most recently, CDU's distribution of ministries was criticized. The CDU, if coalition were to come to an agreement, would lose Ministry of Finance to SPD and Ministry of Interior to CSU. The general criticism of coalition agreement had also been heaped up last.
