Montenegro has elected a new president. In election on Sunday, multiple state and Prime Minister Milo Đukanović first forecasts that 53 percent of votes were received. If result were confirmed, he would have been elected by an absolute majority in first round and would not be in a runoff.

Đukanović was considered a favorite. The opposition is fragmented and has had six candidates. The biggest competitor Đukanovićs was Mladen Bojanić, who was supported by several opposition groups, among m some prorussian. Bojanić received second 34 percent of vote. The previous president, Filip Vujanović, had not yet rejoined due to a term limit.

Đukanović led country 2016 despite threats from Russia to NATO and has already announced that it intends to integrate Montenegro more strongly in Europe. Its Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) has ruled small state on Adriatic for more than 25 years. Since n, Đukanović has been eir president or prime Minister with a few exceptions.

DPS recently lost major cities

Đukanović is currently criticized: in local elections, DPS had recently lost important cities. Next month, re will be municipal elections in capital of Podgorica, where opposition is expecting better opportunities.

The opposition has long been accusing Đukanović of leading Montenegro as its family property. He is authoritarian and has built up his millions of fortunes in a dubious way with his closeness to mafia, accusations. Despite criticism, Đukanović is an important point of contact for EU.

Montenegro is a candidate for EU membership. From EU Commission's point of view, country could already join 2025. Then, according to will of EU Commission, Serbia could also become part of union if necessary reforms were to be implemented.
