Because of their role during the coup attempt, more than 100 Turkish military personnel have to go to prison for life. 52 other convicts also received long-term sentences.

In Turkey, more than 100 defendants have been sentenced to life sentences for ir involvement in failed military coup of 2016. According to reports by Turkish news agency Anadolu against 104 of 280 defendants, a court in western Turkish Izmir imposed so-called "aggravated" life sentences for "attempted overthrow of constitutional order". As Turkish newspaper Hurriyet reports, it is highest possible penalty under Turkish law.

According to Anadolu, 21 or defendants were sentenced to 20-JährigenHaftstrafen for attempted assassination of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. 31 defendants must be in custody for half years because of "membership in a terrorist group". All defendants were former members of military, including several generals and senior officers, it was said.

The Turkish Government is responsible for movement of Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen for military coup of July 15, 2016. In overthrow attempt nearly 250 people were killed and 2,200 injured. The Turkish government had detained more than 55,000 suspected Gülen supporters nationwide, including almost 7,500 military personnel. Several hundred putsch parties have already been sentenced to long penalties.

A constitutional referendum following coup, among or things, severely cut powers of Turkish parliament. Erdoğan, on or hand, has virtually access to all three powers in state. Critics refore accuse him of converting Turkey into an authoritarian state.
