Washington: Pompeo sworn in as new US Secretary of state

The United States has a new foreign minister: former CIA chief Mike Pompeo first reached required majority in Senate and was sworn in immediately afterwards. Already on Friday, Pompeo wants to take part in a NATO foreign ministerial meeting in Brussels. From Belgium, new US chief diplomat is to travel to Middle East, where he will visit Israel, Saudi Arabia and Jordan, as a Foreign Office spokeswoman said.

The appointment of POMPEO as a hardliners was controversial in Senate. His nomination was approved with only 57 against 42 votes. Most representatives of opposition Democrats voted against him.

Opposition calls Pompeo a war driver

During his hearing in Congress chamber, 54-year-old had to fight back against opposition, he was a war driver and spread anti-Semitic and homophobic views. Pompeo denied being a "hawk", saying that war must always be " last means".

He also expressed his views on concrete foreign policy issues in a relatively moderate form. He pleaded in favour of diplomatic solutions in dispute over nuclear agreement with Iran, to which Trump has to take an official position by 12 May on basis of a legally prescribed deadline.

The appointment of POMPEO as well as new national security adviser John Bolton has increased worries abroad that Trump government could embark on an increasingly confrontational foreign policy line. It is feared, above all, that Trump could terminate laboriously negotiated Iran agreement of 2015.

Agreement with North Korea pushed forward

In conflict over North Korean nuclear and missile program, however, plans for a summit between Trump and leader Kim Jong-un lasted a certain amount of relaxation – at which Pompeo was directly involved. He met Kim in North Korea on a secret mission. The two were "really well understood," Trump n reported.

Pompeo had acquired confidence trumps in his 15-month tenure as director of foreign intelligence CIA. The President's appointment in March is based on fact that Pompeo has same mindset as himself. With his predecessor, Rex Tillerson, whom Trump had dismissed via Twitter and who pursued a moderate course, Trump always crossed over.

While president was able to Pompeos a success with confirmation, he suffered a defeat with anor personality. His candidate for post of veteran minister, his personal physician Ronny Jackson, waived office in face of heavy accusations of unprofessional behavior.

Jackson, who had been doctor of former President Barack Obama, is accused of having poorly treated employees and having readily distributed medications. Also, he should have been drunk at work. In a statement, 50-year-old described accusations as "completely false and invented", but neverless "regrettably" announced his withdrawal.
