Greece: Asylum seekers must have freedom of movement

Greece must grant freedom of movement to asylum seekers until y have completed ir proceedings. This was judged by Supreme Court of country (STE), as Greek state and private broadcasters and news portals unanimously reported. The decision also concerns all migrants coming from Turkey to Greek islands in east of Aegean Sea, it was said.

The decision does not refore apply retroactively. According to data, however, people who arrive on islands in east of Aegean from 17 April and make an application for asylum are concerned. They may no longer be forced to stay in registration camps of Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Leros and Kos, court decided according to reports.

The EU-Turkey refugee pact stipulates that all refugees arriving on islands of Ostägäis must be brought back to Turkey if y do not receive asylum in Greece. The majority of asylum seekers refore had to stay on islands as long as ir proceedings were running.

However, court considers that this restriction violates human rights. Moreover, accumulation of people in camps has devastating consequences for population of islands.

The recording and registration camps on Greek islands are crowded. In largest camp of Moria on island of Lesvos, which is designed for about 3,000 people, awaited, according to Ministry of Migration, 6,456 people on Tuesday.
