10 people want to be Phillipsburg's next superintendent

The process of selecting the next schools superintendent in Phillipsburg is underway.

The district received about 10 letters of interest after advertising the position late last month, said school board President Tom McGuire. That's about what officials expected, he said.

The plan is to start interviews in the next couple of weeks and to have a new superintendent in place by July 1, when current Superintendent George Chando retires, McGuire said.

"It's going to be somewhat tight," he acknowledged. It's common for administrators to have to give 60 days notice before leaving their current employer.

It was unclear how much internal interest there is in the position. McGuire said it is still early in the hiring process and that the letters have not been opened yet.

The job has belonged to Chando since 2012, who that year agreed to a five-year contract that expires June 30 of this year. Chando, who told the board last summer of his intention to retire, has had a long career in Phillipsburg -- where he went to school as a kid and became a teacher 42 years ago.

During his five years as superintendent, he oversaw the completion of a new $127.5 million high school in Lopatcong Township. Gov. Chris Christie personally praised the school as possibly the state's most modern during its dedication last fall.

Chando's contract called for a $167,500 annual salary. The job listing says the next superintendent's salary will be based on education, experience and state regulations.

The advertisement said candidates should be eligible for or already hold certification as a school administrator, with experience in a central school office.
