PALMDALE — A man and a woman were killed when the car they were in crashed into a traffic signal pole in Palmdale during what appears to have been a street race, authorities said today.

It happened about 6:20 p.m. Sunday on 25th Street East near Joshua Hills Drive, Sgt. Oscar Martinez of the Sheriff’s Palmdale Station said.

“Two cars were speeding, likely racing, when one lost control and collided with a traffic signal,” Martinez said. “The vehicle pretty much disintegrated.”

The victims were pronounced dead at the scene, he said. The other vehicle sped away. The deceased were adults, according to the coroner’s office.

The car that crashed was a Chevrolet Camaro, a news videographer reported from the scene.

The roadway remained closed for the investigation, Martinez said.
