An 81-year-old man was nearly struck while walking in a crosswalk outside Wal-Mart in Lower Macungie Township, leading to a dispute with the driver and the victim being hit with a shopping cart, police said.

Pennsylvania State Police at Fogelsville were investigating the incident that occurred between about 3 and 3:10 p.m. Wednesday outside the store at 1091 Mill Creek Road, according to a news release.

The man told police he was walking across the crosswalk when the driver of a maroon Jeep Liberty, possibly from the model years 2002-07, failed to stop and had to swerve into the opposing lane, barely missing the pedestrian, police said.

The driver, described as male in his late 40s to mid-50s, then followed the victim in the Jeep. Once the man got to his van, the driver drove toward the victim and accelerated, according to police.

The Jeep struck the victim's shopping cart, pushing it into the victim, police said. The driver then backed out of the parking lot away from the victim and left in an unknown direction.

Police ask anyone with information on the driver or incident to call police at 610-395-1438. The incident number to reference is PA17-130523.
