A repeat offender would have set his ex's apartment on fire

Barely released from prison for a history of domestic violence, a man was arrested again, this time because he allegedly set fire to his ex-spouse's apartment in Magog.

Nicolas Collin was handcuffed last Friday in connection with an arson attack that had broken out five days earlier in an apartment building located on Principale East Street.

The 32-year-old accused would have directly targeted the apartment of his ex-spouse, can we read in the act of denunciation.

"I lost everything," the victim wrote on Facebook, days after his home was engulfed in flames.

No one was injured in the fire, which seriously affected two of the building's four apartments.

Collin was charged Saturday at the Sherbrooke courthouse and remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.

Charges of criminal harassment and mischief on the vehicle of his ex-spouse were also filed against the Magog resident for events that allegedly took place after the fire.

"The crimes charged are all related to the separation of the couple," said Memphremagog police spokesman Carl Pépin.

Not the first time

Nicolas Collin was released from prison at the end of September, after serving a 33-day prison sentence.

He had been convicted of mischief against the same ex-spouse.

Since 2019, Collin had been arrested numerous times by Magog police officers for offenses related to domestic violence.
