Altamonte Springs 'junk man' set to enter plea

SANFORD — Alan Wayne Davis, the defiantly trashy Seminole County man who has a habit of hauling tons of broken down cars, planes and other seemingly useless things to his front yard, is scheduled to enter a plea Thursday to end his most recent criminal case.

The charge he faces: creating a public nuisance.

For much of the last 25 years, Davis has defied Seminole County code enforcement officers. When they opted to clean up his yard because he refused to, he simply hauled in more junk.

He also has a reputation for acting as his own lawyer, insulting judges and accusing them of violating the law.

Once, when a judge ordered him to move the trash from his yard, he did — by putting it on the roof of his house.

Another time, when a judge ruled against him, he made a giant sculpture of a derriere, hitched it to his truck and drove it to the Seminole County Courthouse.

He has gone to state prison three times rather than clean up his yard on Alpine Street north of Altamonte Mall.

His longest stint came in 2005, when he was convicted and ordered to prison for three years for felony littering.

His most recent arrest came a year ago after the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office, which handles code enforcement matters in that county, hired a crew that used a front end loader and dump truck to haul away 35 tons of junk. It included an old Volvo and two other vehicles, scrap metal, barrels and rusty bicycles.

He racked up more than $1.9 million in code enforcement fines and a special magistrate ruled that his property was a health and safety concern, said Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Heather Smith.

Since his arrest in February 2016, he’s been in and out of the Seminole County Jail for failing to abide by the terms of his bond.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
