Armed bank bandit caught after highway chase, cops say

An Allentown man is accused of robbing an Emmaus bank Wednesday morning and then leading authorities on a chase through Lehigh County.

Emmaus police said John Cruz, 41, was only stopped after Pennsylvania State Police used an "intervention technique" with a cruiser on Route 309 in Upper Saucon Township.

Cruz was arrested and is awaiting arraignment on robbery, simple assault and related charges, according to police.

Police said at about 9:20 a.m., Cruz walked into Key Bank, 731 Chestnut St. in Emmaus, displayed a gun and demanded money.

Cruz left with an undisclosed amount of cash and fled, police said. Officers spotted the getaway car on Lehigh Street, near 33rd Street, but when officers tried to stop the car he allegedly fled.

Cruz drove on Interstate 78 East, then onto Route 309. Police learned the car he was driving was reported stolen Wednesday morning from Fountain Hill.
