Cops: 1 killed, 1 in custody after New Smyrna Beach shooting

An argument in a New Smyrna Beach neighborhood ended early this morning with one man dead and another in police custody.

New Smyrna Beach police responded just after 1 a.m. to reports of a shooting on the 500 block of Washington Street and found 26-year-old James Jackson lying in the road with multiple gunshot wounds.

Emergency medical crews rushed him to a hospital, where he later died, police said

Witnesses told officers Jackson was seen arguing with another man. Several gunshot were then heard and Jackson fell to the ground, according to police.

Officers found the other man, a 32-year-old New Smyrna Beach resident, in a nearby home. He came out when police ordered him to, and was being questioned, Lt. Shane Riggle said.

Charges against him were pending further investigation, Riggle said.

Police shut down a block of Washington Street while investigating.
