Emaciated dog found chained outside in cold slowly recovering

HOWELL -- A dog found chained outdoors and severely emaciated is getting a second chance, thanks to the Monmouth County SPCA.

Rescuers responded last week to an anonymous tip to animal control in Howell and found Buster, a dog who was chained outside in the cold and rain with no visible food or water, the SPCA said on Facebook on Monday.

"Buster was completely emaciated and dehydrated and at first glance, his future looked very grim," the group said in its post.

There was no indication as to how long Buster may have been left outside.

A medical team discovered that he was covered in fleas, was suffering from ear and skin infections and had rotting teeth and low muscle mass.

Buster was given fluids and pain medication for his swollen joints and has been put on a strict feeding schedule because his stomach has shrunk, the SPCA said.

"Buster's former owners will be facing criminal charges so that he can be brought to justice," the group said.

The group has already surpassed its $5,000 goal. But donations for Buster or other animals in need can still be made here.
