The city has hit Hank Freid with a second round of fines under a new law targeting illegal Airbnb apartment listings. The landlord was initially fined $12,000 for listing short-term rentals at the Marrakech Hotel on the Upper East Side in early February. Now Freid has been slapped with 15 more violations relating to listings at 258 West 97th St., according to a report in The Real Deal.
Last year, Albany passed a law establishing fines for individuals advertising entire apartments on room-sharing sites such as Airbnb for less than 30 days. Under state law, these short-term rentals are only legal if the occupant is there as well. The law went into effect earlier this month and the city has begun cracking down on landlords in violation.
“We will use all enforcement tools to protect affordable housing, and New Yorkers and visitors alike,” a mayoral spokeswoman told The Real Deal. “Turning apartment buildings into illegal hotels damages neighborhoods and will not be tolerated.”
