HAMILTON -- A 16-year-old driver sped away from State Police before he crashed on the New Jersey Turnpike, leading troopers to recover loaded guns and drugs from the car Saturday, authorities said.

Troopers spotted a green Subaru Impreza speeding on Interstate 295 near milepost 59.9 around 1:40 a.m. and tried to pull over the car, according to a statement from police. The car didn't stop for the marked State Police unit and continued speeding away.

The 16-year-old driver lost control of the Subaru, which crashed into a traffic barrier near Interchange seven on the Turnpike, State Police said. Troopers arrested the driver and two other men in the car. There were no injuries in the wreck, according to police.

In the car, troopers discovered two handguns loaded with illegal hollow point bullets, marijuana, heroin and other drug paraphernalia, according to the statement.

The driver and his two passengers, identified as Brian Rodriguez, 18, and Jonathan Martinez, 24, both of Lawrence Township, were charged with various weapons and drug charges, authorities said. The 16-year-old, a Lawrenceville resident, was also charged with driving while intoxicated.

Rodriguez and Martinez were sent to the Burlington County Jail on a no bail warrant, according to police. The 16-year-old was held at the Burlington County Youth Detention Center.

State Police did not identify the 16-year-old because of his age.
