Monmouth University football players arrested after fight at off-campus party

DEAL - A pair of Monmouth University football players were charged with multiple offenses Sunday after police were called to a large fight at an off-campus party.

Shortly before 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, a large fight reportedly broke out at the off-campus home of members of the Monmouth University football team when a group of approximately 30 people were denied entry into a party, police said.

That group of people proceeded to vandalized several motor vehicles parked in the area, police said.

Several other smaller fights broke out as police officers from Deal, Ocean Township, Long Branch and Allenhurst attempted to clear the home of approximately 200-300 partygoers.

Police said many of the party's attendees "were very uncooperative toward officers on scene and fled the location."

Two Monmouth University football players who were tenants of the home - Christian Runza Jr., 20, of Norwood, and Michael Christ, 21, of Sterling, Virgina - were subsequently arrested and charged in connection with the incident.

Runza and Christ were both charged with disorderly conduct, maintaining a nuisance, providing alcohol to underage persons and borough ordinance violations for underage consumption of alcohol on private property and littering.

They were on a summons pending a future court date.

The assaults and criminal mischief to the vehicles that were parked in the area, as well as other violations were still being investigated by the Deal Police Department as of Thursday.

Anyone with information on who is responsible is encouraged to call the Deal Police Department. Surveillance footage is being reviewed and we are receiving cooperation from Monmouth University police.
