Police say a man who lives in a downtown apartment building showed up to  Providence Park in Wednesday's wee hours with a reusable shopping bag and possibly a mission to restock his kitchen with junk food.

A security guard spotted Aaron Martin Mitchell at 2:45 a.m. in an off-limits area inside the soccer stadium, according to a probable cause affidavit. He was carrying two large bags of frozen potato tots, nine boxes of M&Ms and a six-pack of hard cider in the shopping bag and a backpack, the affidavit says.

Mitchell ran when the guard yelled, but the guard caught him, the court document says.

When a Portland police officer who arrived asked Mitchell why he thought police were called to the scene, Mitchell responded: "Because I was not fast enough to get away," according to the affidavit.

Police said Mitchell admitted to taking the snacks from the stadium, home of the Portland Timbers.

He was arraigned five hours later on one count of second-degree burglary, then released from jail.

Mitchell gave authorities a home address that's about half -mile from the stadium. He said he works part-time at a warehouse.

He has no prior criminal history.
