NEWARK -- Newark police have announced additional arrests following Sunday's crackdown on groups of people riding ATVs and off-road motorcycles illegally through the city.
In all, police have made 11 arrests and towed 23 vehicles, including all-terrain vehicles, transport vehicles, quads and off-road motorcycles.
Six of the vehicles towed are registered in New Jersey, seven in Maryland and at least one vehicle each from New York, Virginia, Connecticut, Arizona, Delaware, Oregon and Florida, police said.
The newly announced arrests are:
- Keith Williams, 26, of Hackensack - receiving stolen property
- Marquis Smith, 24, of New Rochelle, N.Y. - receiving stolen property and criminal trespass
- Deshawn Glean, 28, of New Rochelle, N.Y. - criminal trespass
- Justin Gumble, 22, of Chester, N.Y. - criminal trespass
- Andrew Jones, 25, of Goshen, N.Y. - criminal trespass
"The influx of outsiders coming into our city to ride dirt bikes and quads diverts precious police resources away from our primary function of fighting crime and keeping our residents safe," Police Director Anthony Ambrose said in a statement.
"We will arrest suspects, tow their vehicles, seize their quads and use our helicopter and special units to attack this plague and to achieve the goal of safeguarding our city."
Ambrose previously said two patrol cars were damaged during an encounter at Irvine Turner Boulevard and West Peddie streets.
He said riders vandalized the cars when officers exited them to arrest one of their accomplices. While the two officers were struggling to keep the suspect from fleeing, other riders kicked the two police cars and broke the car's windows and mirrors.
Ambrose said one motorcyclist collided with a New Jersey Transit bus at Pennsylvania Avenue and Lincoln Park, and was issued summonses and hospitalized for his injuries.
